The French Ministry of Ecological Transition has announced that the reintroduction program for the capercaillie in the Vosges mountains is not expected to continue beyond 2029, following a period of two years that has seen nearly all of the reintroduced birds die.

Launched to restore the large grouse population in the region, the initiative now faces a limited future and impending closure as authorities evaluate the heavy mortality rate among the birds and the viability of the ongoing conservation efforts.
