2027: I’ll resign as minister if Tinubu loses FCT, Rivers – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said President Bola Tinubu should remove him from office if he fails to deliver the FCT to the President in the 2027 general elections. Wike stated this on Wednesday during an engagement with the leadership and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja. The former Rivers State governor said political appointees should be prepared to accept responsibility for the electoral performance of their areas of influence.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, I am not worthy to be here. It means that whatever I am doing here, the people don’t think I am doing the right thing,” Wike said. He added that he would consider himself unfit to remain FCT minister if he failed to secure electoral victory for Tinubu in the territory.

“And if I lose here, I should not be in that position. I tell people that I am a practical person. If I lose FCT, I am not supposed to be in FCT administration,” he said.

Wike also extended the same standard to Rivers State, where he served as governor for eight years, saying he could not continue to publicly support Tinubu while failing to deliver electoral support in his home state. “And if I go back to my state and the president cannot win, what am I shouting about the president, the president, when I cannot win?” he asked. The minister challenged other political appointees to accept similar responsibility for delivering electoral results in their respective areas.

“I want other people to take these kinds of challenges. I have taken Rivers State and FCT; let everybody take. You take this one; tell the president, if I don’t deliver this, remove me from here; I’ve said so,” Wike said.

His comments come amid political disagreements between him and some All Progressives Congress, APC, governors over the Rainbow Coalition he formed ahead of the 2027 elections. Wike, a former governor and member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has remained a prominent figure in the political realignment ahead of the 2027 polls while serving in Tinubu’s cabinet.
