$4.4bn cleanup turns Ohio’s Fernald uranium site into wetlands and forest

The Fernald uranium plant in Ohio has been transformed into a 1,050-acre nature preserve featuring wetlands and forests following a $4.4 billion environmental cleanup effort. The facility had operated for nearly four decades before halting production in 1989.

The extensive remediation project addressed significant environmental hazards at the site, which included radioactive waste as well as contaminated soil and groundwater. The completed restoration project ultimately converted the industrial location into the Fernald Preserve.
