$40M project rebuilds vanishing Mississippi islands near Iowa

Efforts are officially underway on a $40 million project to rejuvenate vanishing islands and bolster habitats along Iowa's Mississippi River. The construction initiative commenced in 2025 and features phased work extending through 2030.

The project utilizes dredged materials obtained from ongoing navigation upkeep to form new islands, which are designed to safeguard local shorelines. This undertaking operates as part of a larger initiative involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
