(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Six men will be charged tomorrow over the kidnapping of a 46-year-old man in Petaling Jaya on July 17 for a RM7 million ransom. Federal criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the six were among eight people arrested in connection with the case.

In a statement, Kumar said they will be charged in the Petaling Jaya sessions court with kidnapping for ransom under the Kidnapping Act 1961, which is punishable by 30 to 40 years in prison and whipping, if convicted. The other two suspects - a man and a woman - have been released and will give evidence as prosecution witnesses, he said. Police had rescued the victim from a residential unit in i-City, Shah Alam, in less than 48 hours after he was kidnapped in Petaling Jaya.

His wife had lodged a report over the abduction and the RM7 million ransom demand. The victim was later detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 after investigations found that a drug trafficking syndicate might be linked to the case. Several suspects as well as the victim had tested positive for drugs when they were arrested.
