A boat capsizes in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state, leaving more than 40 people dead, officials and witnesses say

A boat capsized on Thursday in a river in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state, resulting in at least 47 deaths. The vessel was transporting more than 80 passengers, most of whom were traveling to farms for work in Gorau town, located in the Goronyo local government area.

Officials from the National Inland Waterways Authority and local residents confirmed the incident. While initial reports indicated more than 40 fatalities, subsequent accounts have specified a death toll of 47.
