NewzOREGON, USA -- Jamaica’s Able Mills will contest back-to-back finals on Thursday’s second day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, just under two hours apart. Mills, who qualified for the discus final on Wednesday’s opening day, will start her quest for honours at 6:00pm local time, (8:00pm Jamaica time) before the start of the shot put at 9:40pm local time. The US-based Mills threw 53.37m in the discus throw qualification, good for seventh best overall.
She qualified for the shot put final on Thursday morning with 15.84m, ninth best overall. Both distances are just short of her personal bests, 53.85m in the discus that she threw to win the gold medal at the Carifta Games in Grenada, and 15.88m set in Kingston on July 27. Mills, the only female field event athlete in the Jamaican team, extended her best season ever to qualify for the final set for Thursday’s second session. Mills won the girls Under-20 shot put/discus throw double at the Carifta Games in April, both in personal best marks and says she will need to exceed her bests to make it to the podium. She was fourth in Group A, throwing her best mark in the first round, an effort she described as “a safe throw”.
“I just was working on some like technical cues to get the discus up and out, but it was good. Mills fouled her second attempt before ending with 52.38m. While noting that a personal best in the final would be great, she says getting a medal is the main goal.
