NewzDavid Cole has been surrounded by music from birth, so it was no surprise that he decided to step into music production. He made his musical debut in the late 1990s, when he produced Uchi-La by the late Dutty Cup Crew member Dadigan. Cole, who is the son of the late football star and Bob Marley’s former tour manager Allan ‘Skill’ Cole, has teamed up with Stephen Marley and Beenie Man for the song Winning.
Makonnen Blake Hannah is co-producer of the track. “The concept for the song started with the World Cup influencing the chorus ‘winning’, which Stephen sang. I played it to Beenie Man and pointed him in the direction and he just did the rest,” Cole told Observer Online on Wednesday.
And while Cole has previously worked with Marley, this was his first time producing a song for Beenie Man. “I’ve known Stephen literally all my life and been working with him professionally since 1998 with the Ghetto Youth outfit. Moses (Beenie Man) is a longtime friend who I met in 1997 at Bobby Digital on a session with Lt Stitchie.
But this is the first time working with him in this space,” Cole explained. Winning is scheduled for release on September 18. Blake Hannah spoke about working alongside Cole on the track.
“Well, I've known David since I was three years old, he's like a big brother to me. My mother and his parents are part of a very conscious friend group that helped build the cultural foundation we stand on today. He brought the song to me in its early stages to steer the project and handle the A&R (artiste and repertoire) side of things so I’m not only wearing my production hat on this one,” said Blake Hannah.
Cole’s mother is singer and former I-Threes member Judy Mowatt.
