Javier Colomina, NATO's special representative for the Southern Neighborhood, has publicly criticized numerous alliance members, particularly in northern Europe, for failing to grasp the security threat posed by the Sahel region. Speaking on the matter, the high-ranking official emphasized that the area has transformed into the epicenter of terrorism and warned that military or strategic intervention in the region will be necessary.

The remarks highlight an internal division within the transatlantic alliance regarding geopolitical priorities, contrasting the security concerns of southern allies with those of northern member states. The Sahel region, stretching across Africa south of the Sahara, has faced mounting instability in recent years due to the proliferation of extremist groups, governance crises, and humanitarian emergencies, drawing increased international scrutiny.
