Australia adds optional gender identity and sexual orientation questions to census

Australia has introduced optional questions regarding sexual orientation and gender identity to its national census for the first time. The new inquiries allow citizens to disclose if they identify as a different gender than the one recorded at birth, as well as state their sexual orientation.

The inclusion of these topics in the census, which takes place every five years, marks a notable and contentious debut for the demographic survey.
