Dark stain in the Pánuco River: What did the Navy and Pemex find in front of the Madero Refinery?

Mexican authorities inspected and contained a dark-colored discharge originating from the Madero Refinery, operated by the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), located near the Pánuco River in the northeastern part of the country.

The incident prompted a coordinated response after a dark coloration was initially detected in the refinery's discharges by the Secretariat of the Navy (Marina). In response to the finding, Pemex and the Navy were joined by the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection to investigate and address the spill.

The event highlights regulatory and environmental oversight of state-run energy infrastructure in Mexico, as multiple federal agencies mobilized to inspect and manage the environmental impact of the industrial discharge.
