B.C.'s Eby says NDP would tax new, unsold condos, raise speculation, vacancy fees

British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby announced that a re-elected NDP government would implement a new tax on new, unsold condominiums and increase the existing speculation and vacancy tax. The proposed measures are aimed at improving housing affordability within the province.

Eby justified the policy by pointing to a report from Real Property Data, which he described as damming. The report estimates that thousands of unsold housing units, collectively valued at $4.4 billion, are currently sitting empty across Metro Vancouver.
