ST George’s College defender Dominic Thompson’s CSEC results are impressive enough on their own – seven grade ones and a grade two from eight subjects this year, taking his total to nine grade ones from 10 subjects. But for Thompson, the bigger achievement may be how he has managed to excel in the classroom while developing into a leader on the football field. Thompson’s eight subjects in 2026 took his CSEC tally to 10, after he picked up distinctions in electronic document preparation and management (EDPM) in grade nine and mathematics in grade 10.
The defender captained St George’s Under-16 team last year and is now a member of the school’s Manning Cup team. He has represented the “Light Blues” from the youth levels while also playing for Harbour View where he has captained the Under-15 and Under-17 teams. So how did Dominic Roger Ronaldo Thompson – whose middle names honour his father, Roger, and football great Cristiano Ronaldo – achieve such success in both academics and football?
“Many people advocate for a rigid, hourly schedule but I’ve found that high-level sports are rarely predictable. Between travel, extra-time matches, and heavy study loads, rigidity can lead to burnout. Instead, I use a free-flowing system that prioritises tasks based on immediate demands.
I focus on holding myself accountable to high standards rather than adhering to a strict clock,” Thompson told the Sunday Observer. “My leadership roles expanded this perspective significantly. Captaining Harbour View FC at the U-15 and U-17 levels, as well as St George’s College at the U-16 level, taught me that balance isn’t just an individual effort, it’s about communication and setting measurable milestones,” he said.
Thompson, who is expected to lead the Light Blues’ backline, said that since starting high school he has always aspired to leave with a scholarship to pursue sports engineering while continuing to chase his dream of becoming a professional footballer. “As a student athlete the pressure tends to be more on me than on a regular student. Plans had to be made from earlier on to decrease my workload in fifth form,” he said.
Thompson, like his coach Andrew Price, will be at the heart of the St George’s defence as they look to return the glory days to the Light Blues of North Street. New coach Price has already developed a high opinion of his defender Thompson and has high praises…
