Bamanga Tukur’s last wish for PDP was keep flag flying – Turaki camp

By Luminous Jannamike The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Interim National Working Committee-led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN, on Saturday mourned the party’s former National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who died at 90, recalling that the elder statesman’s final message to the party was a call to keep its flag flying and preserve its place as Nigeria’s truly national political platform. According to the PDP INWC, Tukur’s death marked the loss of not just a former national chairman, but a statesman whose political and professional career spanned decades and who remained committed to the party’s future until his final months. In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on behalf of the Interim National Working Committee, the PDP said Tukur had, during his last interaction with the party leadership, reaffirmed his faith in the party and charged its National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, to sustain its mission.

“During our last interaction with him a few months ago, he specifically reiterated his unflinching belief in the PDP as the truly national party capable of providing solutions to Nigeria’s challenges and charged our National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, to keep the flag of the party flying,” the party said. The PDP said Tukur’s passing, though painful to his political family, should also be seen against the backdrop of a life spent serving Nigeria in politics, public administration and the economy. “His death at the age of 90, though painful to us, his political family, is viewed by us as a statesman’s farewell,” the party said.

Tukur, it recalled, played prominent roles in shaping policies and projects in several sectors of the Nigerian economy, particularly ports administration, international trade and industries. His political career included service as Governor of the old Gongola State, as well as several other high-ranking political and public offices. Describing him as a man of many parts, the PDP said his political profile was as rich as his professional record.

The party said the former chairman’s death had been received with deep sadness by members of the PDP across Nigeria and in the diaspora, while extending its condolences to his family and the many Nigerians who admired him. “We join his many admirers to mourn his passing and condole with his family,” the PDP said. Tukur’s death marks the end of a long public career that took him from the governorship of the old Gongola State to the federal cabinet, the leadership of the Nigerian Ports Authority, international business circles and, ultimately, the national chairmanship of the PDP. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP described Tukur as a distinguished statesman, elder, administrator, businessman and committed member of the party. The party recalled that Tukur served as Governor of the old Gongola State from October to December 1983 before later serving as Minister of Industries and Chief Executive/General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA. Beyond government, he also established a presence in the private sector and international business community, including as president of the Africa Business Roundtable and chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, among other positions.
