Barbara Zamora*/I: Right to have an opinion, but not the right to decide

The General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples is currently under review, addressing a broad spectrum of issues concerning these communities. The legislation encompasses diverse areas including land and territorial rights, cultural heritage, electoral processes, and the implementation of formal consultation mechanisms.

Beyond these core governance issues, the law also regulates matters related to traditional medicine, employment opportunities, and economic development. By formalizing these rights, the legislation seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for how indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities interact with the state and manage their own resources.
