According to Ecuadorian authorities, this assault exposes the mounting pressure exerted by organized crime on maritime security in Ecuador.

Meanwhile, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, leaving thousands of people displaced and injured, and destroying homes and belongings. In response to the disaster, regional solidarity emerged as thirty firefighter rescuers and five structural engineers traveled from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Cali, Colombia, to assist with search, rescue, and structural evaluation efforts.
