Boxer secures Tuvalu’s first Commonwealth Games medal without winning a bout

Tarona Taafaki has made history for Tuvalu by securing the Pacific island nation’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal. The 20-year-old boxer earned a bronze medal in the women’s 75kg category during the competition.

Taafaki achieved this milestone without winning a bout, as tournament regulations dictate that all boxers eliminated in the semi-finals receive a bronze medal. She was one of five athletes representing Tuvalu at the Games.
