Brussels calls on Meta and TikTok to increase monitoring and verification following the crisis in Ceuta

On August 8, Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, formally requested that Meta and TikTok enhance their content monitoring and data verification processes. The directive follows the recent crisis in Ceuta, where digital platforms were identified as vectors for information related to the situation.

The request underscores the European Union's ongoing efforts to ensure digital platforms maintain rigorous standards for content moderation during geopolitical or regional instability. By targeting major social media companies, the Commission aims to curb the spread of misinformation and improve the oversight of data circulating in relation to the events at the border.
