Butcher of Bosnia Ratko Mladic, former general convicted of genocide, dies at The Hague

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide and war crimes, has died in prison while serving a life sentence at The Hague. Mladić, widely referred to as the "Butcher of Bosnia," passed away at the age of 84 or 85.

He was convicted for his central role in orchestration of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, which claimed the lives of at least 8,000 Muslim men and boys in a United Nations-designated safe area. This atrocity is recognized as Europe's worst massacre since the Second World War.

Mladić's death marks the end of a chapter for the high-profile international war crimes tribunal proceedings stemming from the 1990s Bosnian War, following a years-long evasion of justice before his eventual capture and imprisonment.
