KINGSTON, Jamaica—Inspired by a tragedy and determined to make a difference, Campion College sixth-form student Alliana Freeman has launched Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica, a community initiative equipping caregivers and other Jamaicans with essential lifesaving skills. The initiative was inspired by the death of Kerron Powell, who reportedly choked during a bun-eating contest in Christiana, Manchester, in March 2026. The incident deeply affected Alliana and reinforced her belief that more people should have access to practical training to help them respond to emergencies.
Working with St John Ambulance Jamaica, Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica held its first two training cohorts in July and August 2026, providing 19 participants with free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic first aid training. The sessions covered fundamental first aid principles, emergency response procedures, and practical skills to help participants respond with greater confidence while awaiting professional medical assistance. The initiative places particular emphasis on caregivers, whose responsibilities include supporting the health and well-being of others.

An emergency can happen anywhere and at any time, and knowing what to do in those critical moments can make all the difference.
Through Safe Hands Safe Hearts Jamaica, I hope to empower caregivers and ordinary Jamaicans with skills that can help protect families and strengthen our communities,” said Alliana. The initiative brings together her interests in medicine, community service, and youth leadership. As an aspiring healthcare professional, Alliana hopes to demonstrate that young people can take meaningful action to address needs in their communities.
