Nearly 8,200 prisoners have died in Venezuelan jails in the last fifteen years, according to an NGO.

The Venezuelan non-governmental organization Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (OVP) reported that 8,192 detainees have died in the country's prison system over the past fifteen years. The data, released on August 14, highlights a long-term trend of mortality within the nation's correctional facilities.

Following the release of these figures, the OVP has formally called upon Venezuelan authorities to provide an account regarding the circumstances surrounding these deaths. The organization's request seeks transparency and official explanation for the high number of fatalities recorded within the prison population during this period.
