China’s new tech, national security exit rules take effect

New exit-and-entry rules governing travel to and from China took effect on Tuesday, further tightening the government's control over its citizens. The regulations impose curbs on personal foreign travel, building upon existing restrictions that have long applied to senior Chinese officials and state executives with access to confidential information.

Under the updated policies, citizens who are deemed to have harmed China's national security or interests while overseas can be barred from leaving the country for up to three years. Additionally, individuals considered a potential threat to national technology are subject to the new exit curbs, according to reports from international observers.
