China-Tanzania Friendship Cup uses sport to deepen cultural understanding, friendship and people-to-people relations

DAR ES SALAAM: AS Tanzania and China continue to build on their longstanding friendship, a table tennis competition is offering a practical way to translate diplomatic goodwill into people-to-people connections, cultural understanding and broader cooperation. The fifth China-Tanzania Friendship Cup Table Tennis Competition recently in Dar es Salaam demonstrated that sport can complement formal diplomacy by creating direct interaction between the two peoples and opening new possibilities for sustained sporting and cultural exchanges. The competition has grown beyond a contest for points and medals, becoming a platform where Tanzanians and Chinese meet, compete, learn from one another and build friendships.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian said sport could overcome differences of language, culture and nationality while promoting values that are important to lasting relations. “Sports have long been recognised as a universal language. It transcends national boundaries, cultural differences, and even linguistic barriers,” Chen said, citing teamwork, perseverance, fair play and respect as values that connect people through sport.

For China, table tennis provides a particularly strong cultural link. Ambassador Chen noted that more than 100 million people play the sport in China, reflecting its popularity and significance in Chinese society. She also spoke of her personal connection with the game, recalling how she played and competed with friends in her younger days and developed lasting friendships through those experiences.

“For me personally, table tennis is more than just a sport; it is also a source of cherished memories,” she said. Tanzania has also developed a growing interest in the sport, with its national team participating in regional and international competitions. Over the past five years, Chen said, the Friendship Cup has recorded improving standards, broader participation and greater enthusiasm among players and spectators.

More than 130 participants competed in this year’s tournament, underscoring its expanding reach and potential as a people-to-people platform. “This is not just about competition it is about connection.
