China warns of ‘consequences’ over Taiwan presence at Pacific leaders meeting

China has issued a warning of unspecified consequences regarding Taiwan’s participation in the annual Pacific Islands Forum currently held in Palau. Beijing expressed serious concerns over the presence of Taiwan, which attends the summit as a development partner rather than a formal dialogue partner, at the 18-member regional gathering.

In response to the warning, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and representatives from New Zealand have asserted that the Pacific Islands Forum retains the sole authority to determine its own attendees. Australian officials further dismissed Chinese claims that Palau is unsafe for travelers, emphasizing that the regional bloc will continue to manage its own diplomatic affairs independently of external pressure.
