Clashes Break Out at Migrant Facility in Northern Greece

Clashes broke out Saturday night at a closed migrant facility in Sintiki, near Serres in northern Greece, after a group of migrants allegedly attacked police and caused extensive damage to the site. The unrest began shortly after 9 p.m., when migrants reportedly tore down part of an internal fence before throwing stones and other objects at police officers. Several parts of the facility were damaged, including buildings, common areas, security cameras, firefighting equipment and service vehicles.

One entire wing was destroyed, forcing residents to relocate to another section of the facility. Police sent significant reinforcements to the area, including a riot police unit from Thessaloniki. Authorities began a head count early Sunday after discovering that migrants had cut through part of the facility’s outer fence. Officials were working to establish whether anyone had left the premises during the incident. The area remained under police cordon as officers searched for anyone who may have escaped from the facility.
