Lenin Moreno sentenced to five years in prison

Former Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno, who served from 2017 to 2021, was sentenced to five years in prison this Friday. A court found him guilty of bribery, determining that he accepted illicit payments to facilitate the financing of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric project.

The Coca Codo Sinclair facility, which serves as the largest hydroelectric plant in Ecuador, was the central focus of the judicial investigation. The conviction stems from the court's conclusion that the former president utilized his position to secure financial arrangements for the infrastructure project in exchange for bribes.
