Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris has strongly supported New Democracy’s proposal for constitutional revision that, for the first time, protects the Greek flag as a symbol of the nation and safeguards the Greek language. Speaking during the constitutional revision process, Plevris thanked ND rapporteur Evripidis Stylianidis and Constitutional Revision Committee chairman Makis Voridis for advancing the measure. “You understand the value of the constituent legislator closing a discussion that some people used to attack the national symbol and protecting it at constitutional level,” Plevris stated.
He expressed concern that the provision may not secure the more than 180 votes required for future revision. “Some parties that present themselves as ‘sensitive’ should know that if they do not vote for these provisions and the 180 votes are not reached in this Parliament, no one guarantees they will exist in the next one. They will therefore be responsible for a one-off revision.
