NewzKINGSTON, Jamaica — Almost 200 rounds of assorted ammunition were seized by the police in two separate incidents on Wednesday. The ammo was found after St Andrew South police conducted operations in Tavares Gardens, more popularly known as Payneland, and on Omara Road off Hagley Park Road. The find included one hundred and forty 7.62 cartridges, twenty-four 5.56 cartridges and six 9mm cartridges.
No arrests were made in connection with the seizures, the police said. Head of the Area Four police, Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, said the ammunition belonged to gangs from both areas, and one of them was involved in the sale of firearms and ammo. “We are continuing our major operational activities in Area Four where we seek to go in search of wanted persons and others who are regarded as high-risk targets,” ACP Phipps told Observer Online.
“This is really in furtherance of an intensification of our efforts to apprehend gang members and to recover firearms and ammunition. Yesterday our efforts resulted in the seizures.” Reports said that around 1:45 pm, police conducted a targeted operation in Tavares Garden and entered a board structure dwelling. During the search, the police said a plastic bottle was found on the roof.
The bottle was checked and found to contain the 5.56 and 9mm cartridges. Less than two hours later, a police party conducted another search on Omara Road during which a blue cloth bag was found along the fence of a garage. Upon checking the bag, it had six small boxes and a white cloth bag containing the 7.62 rounds.
The ACP said the 7.62 and 5.56 cartridges are used in high-powered weapons such as AK-47 and M-16 rifles. “Of course, we will continue with our efforts across the divisions as part of our major operational activities,” he added.
