A forensic doctor from Chania, Crete has been released under restrictive conditions after a marathon six-hour testimony over allegations involving allegedly falsified forensic reports and bribery. Authorities released the accused doctor at 2am on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after the prosecutor and investigating magistrate imposed bail conditions, including a €20,000 guarantee and a ban on leaving Greece. The forensic examiner returned to the Chania courthouse at 7:30pm after requesting additional time for his lawyer to prepare his defence.
When the judicial authorities announced their decision, relatives and supporters waiting outside the court applauded. The hearing focused on four separate charges, all of which the doctor strongly denies. Lawyer Ioulita Tzougaraki described the proceedings as a difficult and lengthy process, stating that her client completely rejects all allegations. She claimed that the Chania forensic doctor had previously faced unfair accusations and public criticism, saying this represented the second time he had been targeted both locally and across Greece.
Tzougaraki also addressed earlier claims that the doctor had been suspended over another matter, arguing that he had never been placed on suspension and that preliminary disciplinary reviews had found no evidence against him. The case forms part of a wider investigation into alleged criminal activity in Crete involving accusations of corruption and manipulation of official documents. A Chania toxicologist was also accused in connection with the same investigation and was likewise released under restrictive conditions.
