NewzKINGSTON, Jamaica — CVM Television Managing Editor Tyrone Reid has been elected president of the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ). Reid was elected during the association’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday at its headquarters in St Andrew. Commenting on his appointment, Reid thanked God and his colleagues while underscoring the importance of press freedom to Jamaica’s democracy.
“It is a distinct honour to serve in this capacity. Of course there is lots of heavy lifting to do; the business of press freedom is important, serious business. There is a famous saying, ‘Democracy dies in darkness, and the press serves as that spotlight to illuminate the path of democracy,” Reid said.
He also lauded outgoing president Dashan Hendricks and the previous executive for their work. Reid will lead a nine-member executive, which will serve a two-year term. The new executive comprises Kimberley Hibbert, first vice-president; Kimone Francis, second vice-president; Dashan Hendricks, treasurer; Neika Lewis, secretary; and Javaughn Keyes, assistant secretary/treasurer.
Jovan Johnson, Zahra Burton and Janet Silvera will serve as directors.
