CHAMPION and leading trainer Jason DaCosta and leading rider Tevin Foster stole the show at Caymanas Park when both combined to win three races on the ninerace card on Saturday. DaCosta and Foster’s winners were highlighted by a dominant performance by Gallant Groom (USA) in the $1.25-million Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy, an Overnight Allowance contest over one mile (1,600m). Gallant Groom chased Neo Star (Raddesh Roman) from second position for the first part of the race.
When Foster sent Gallant Groom through to take up the running entering the halfmile (800m) turn, the race was pretty much over as the four-year-old began to open up on the field with every stride. Gallant Groom went on to win by 24 1/4 lengths ahead of Oil Machine (Omar Walker) and Whizz Kidd (Richie Shakes) in a time of 1:36.10 minutes. Their other winners were Money Monster in the fourth race and Eye of the Tiger in the sixth race.
Newly-licensed trainers Collin Elcock and Dean Cooper saddled their first career winners. Elcock won with Round The Twist (Tajay Suckoo) in the opening race with Cooper was successful with Rapida (Eric Haughton) in the eighth race. The action continues on Sunday with another nine-race card.
