Death toll from Indonesia’s ferry sinking jumps to 64

The death toll from the sinking of the ferry Virgo Transport 8 in Indonesia's Java Sea has risen to 64, according to an official statement made on Saturday nearly two weeks after the vessel went missing. Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency rescuers recovered four bodies from the submerged wreck, while an additional seven bodies were discovered along the shoreline.

The vessel was carrying a total of 243 people—comprising 213 passengers and 30 crew members—when it lost contact with its shipping company. In response to the rising casualty count and the ongoing uncertainty regarding those still unaccounted for, rescue teams have extended their search efforts to locate the dozens of individuals remaining missing.
