The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) has given the green light to a major package of defence contracts that form part of the Armed Forces’ long-term procurement programme. Achilles’ Shield – Greece’s New Multi-Layer Defence System At the centre of the approvals is Achilles’ Shield, an integrated anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic and anti-drone system. Dendias described it as a series of interconnected protective layers linked by a single command-and-control system. Greek defence industry participation in the programme is valued at €700 million.
The system collects data from all available sensors — including helmet-mounted sights used by Army personnel — processes and prioritises threats, and proposes responses. According to the Minister, it transforms the Armed Forces “from the old model of personnel and systems into a modern machine capable of collecting and processing all data and responding to all challenges.”Advertising1 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Full List of Approved Programmes In addition to Achilles’ Shield, KYSEA approved the following: Non-kinetic systems for countering unmanned vessels The HERON 1 unmanned vessel system Small SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites providing immediate satellite imagery under full national control Class II Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, including ten additional V-BAT systems Night-vision goggles as standard combat equipment for soldiers Three new Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft (first delivery expected in 2027).
