(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji (TH) will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat at a special sitting on Aug 11, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.Anwar said he had discussed the matter with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul and the sitting would begin at 10am.He made the announcement when met by reporters after attending the launch of Maybank’s new headquarters at Menara Merdeka Maybank. The announcement came a day after the report was declassified and released to the public following Cabinet approval, four years after the commission completed it in July 2022.The RCI found serious weaknesses in the pilgrim fund's governance, investment and financial management between 2014 and 2020, and recommended a major overhaul, including tighter oversight, forensic audits of selected investments and limits on political involvement in the institution.Earlier in his speech, Anwar said financial institutions must uphold integrity and good governance to sustain public trust and long-term success. He cited the TH RCI report as a reminder of the importance of integrity in managing financial institutions."The institution nearly collapsed due to negligence, a failure to safeguard it, including its financial management, because of excesses, greed and unchecked desires that ultimately brought about its downfall," he said. However, Anwar said the problems had been detected early and the institution had since been put on a sound footing. He said he was confident TH would continue to perform well.
