Dana Erlich, the chargé d'affaires of Israel in Madrid, stated that Israel's close relationship with Morocco does not mean it is sidelining Spain as an important and historical ally. Erlich made the remarks in September, addressing diplomatic tensions and asserting that the Spanish government is using Israel as a smoke screen.

In addition to addressing the alliance with Spain, the Israeli diplomat denied any involvement by her country in the mass entry of migrants into the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta in late July. However, she warned the Spanish government that failing to work in defense of Israel has a price.
