Dozens protest Meta’s plan for massive data centre in northern Alberta county

Dozens of protesters gathered in Morinville, Sturgeon County, to oppose Meta’s plan to construct its first Canadian data centre. The demonstration, organized by 20-year-old Ben Baril, highlights local resistance to the tech giant's infrastructure project situated north of Edmonton.

Provincial officials have indicated that the facility will initially rely on surplus energy from Alberta’s grid operator. This arrangement is expected to transition by 2030, when a new natural gas-fired power plant is scheduled to begin supplying electricity to the site.
