One of them was in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood on Saturday morning.Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that can cause patchy or total hair loss. Valerie Fuentes, who represents the NAAF and has lived with the condition for more than two decades, said it has a significant emotional and psychological impact beyond appearance.“It takes a lot to get up in the morning, knowing that you don’t have any hair, and go out there and not feel judged,” Fuentes said. “Trying to still be your own person, move on with your life, go to work, knowing that you’re dealing with this.”The NAAF’s walk was being held at Margaret Pace Park, located at 1745 N.
Bayshore Drive.“It’s very difficult, but I think today we’re here to celebrate. We’re here to show up as we are, and that’s my invitation for everyone,” Fuentes said. “My intention today is to create connection because it can be a very isolating disease.
