East end power outage leaves approximately 30,000 customers in the dark

A large swath of the east end of the city has been plunged into darkness due to a power outage. According to Toronto Hydro, more than 20,000 customers were without electricity as of 10:30 p.m. in an area bounded by Lawrence to the north, Woodbine Avenue to the east, Cherry Beach to the south and Jarvis Street to the west.

The utility said in a social media post that the outage was due to a “loss of supply” from Hydro One. “This is an evolving situation, and we don’t yet have a confirmed estimated time of restoration,” read a statement from Toronto Hydro sent to CityNews. Toronto Hydro’s website shows repairs are underway but the majority of customers likely won’t see a return of power until early Thursday morning.

A series of thunderstorms moved through the GTA on Wednesday night, with Environment Canada warning of wind gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour, which could lead to damaged tree branches and downed power lines. According to Toronto Hydro's outage map, the majority of the outages that began around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday were in the city's east end.
