The approach focuses on increased collaboration with regional allies to disrupt narcotics transit routes. This policy update follows a year-long military campaign aimed at intercepting and neutralizing vessels involved in the drug trade.

As part of these ongoing operations, U.S. military officials have recently targeted logistics support in the region. In the last two weeks, six large fishing vessels were sunk off the coast of Ecuador under accusations that they were providing fuel to high-speed boats used to transport drugs from South America.
