Members of the Orquigonia organization discovered 70-million-year-old rudist fossils in Cobán, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. The discovery occurred within the Samac Cooperative during an excursion intended for orchid observation. The fossils, which are embedded in limestone, belong to extinct bivalve mollusks that once inhabited ancient tropical reefs. This find provides evidence of the marine environment that existed in the region during the prehistoric period.
