Congress is considering creating two new provinces

The Dominican Republic's National Congress is currently reviewing two legislative proposals aimed at expanding the nation's administrative map by creating two new provinces. The initiatives seek to elevate specific regions to provincial status to reorganize local governance and territorial representation.

One proposal advocates for the conversion of the Las Matas de Farfán municipality into the province of Santa Lucía. A second, separate initiative proposes the establishment of a new province to be named Matías Ramón Mella. These legislative efforts are currently under formal consideration by the national legislature.
