The Basque Government grants third-degree prison status to the historic former ETA leader Henri Parot

The Basque Government has granted third-degree prison status to former ETA leader Henri Parot. Parot, who has been incarcerated since 1990 serving a cumulative 40-year sentence, is expected to be released from the Zubieta prison in Gipuzkoa in the coming days.

Parot was arrested by the Civil Guard in 1990 while transporting 300 kilograms of explosives toward Seville. His history includes numerous violent acts, beginning with his first crime at age 20. The decision to grant him a more lenient penitentiary regime has been formally opposed by the Collective of Victims of Terrorism, which characterizes him as one of the most violent figures in the history of the organization.
