At the end of the 19th century, landscape architect Carlos Thays spearheaded the ambitious project to create the Botanical Garden in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Developed during a period of rapid urban growth and modernization, the initiative aimed to make Buenos Aires resemble major global capitals.

The project transformed Palermo into a specialized plant laboratory, introducing botanical species from around the world to the city's public spaces. Rather than serving merely as traditional green areas, these new parks and public promenades were designed to function as scientific and cultural assets for the expanding metropolis.
