El Niño could cost the Panama Canal up to $400 million

The Panama Canal could face financial losses ranging from $200 million to $400 million during the 2027 fiscal year due to ongoing water availability issues caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

The projected figures were revealed during the monthly meeting of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (Ape). These potential losses are tied to the necessity of maintaining vessel transit restrictions if water levels remain constrained.
