The summer of 2026 was crowned as the hottest in Spain after experiencing 61 days under a heat wave: extreme temperatures were recorded on two out of every three days.

Spain experienced its hottest summer on record in 2026, according to official data announced by Sara Aagesen, the Third Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The meteorological summer, spanning June, July, and August, registered an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius.

The season was marked by unprecedented extreme heat, with the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands enduring 61 days under heatwaves. This accounted for temperatures being extremely high on two out of every three days of the summer, alongside a total of five heatwaves suffered in the country so far this year.

The 2026 figures surpass all historical records in the country's series dating back to 1961, highlighting a significant escalation in prolonged high-temperature events.
