The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced planned power interruptions in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 23, to facilitate emergency works on a damaged transmission tower at Ashaiman. According to a statement issued on Saturday, August 22, the affected tower is located on the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line and was damaged following a tanker explosion nearby. GRIDCo said its engineers and technical teams will undertake the next phase of the replacement works from 3:00 a.m.
on Sunday to restore the integrity of the transmission line. The company explained that electricity supply to some areas will be interrupted during the exercise to ensure the safety of personnel and the public and allow the technical teams to complete the repairs. GRIDCo said it is working with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to minimise the impact of the outage on affected customers and communities.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as the emergency works are completed. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this interruption will cause and request the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public,” GRIDCo said. (GRIDCo) undertakes emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower on the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line at Ashaiman. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, announced the planned interruption in a public notice to customers and the general public, explaining that the emergency works have become necessary following damage to the transmission infrastructure. The exercise is scheduled to begin at 3:00 a.m.
on Sunday and continue until 6:00 p.m., potentially affecting households, businesses, markets, offices and other electricity consumers in a number of communities across the capital. According to ECG, the transmission tower was damaged when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on the tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW). The incident damaged a critical component of the high-voltage transmission network and has prompted GRIDCo to undertake emergency replacement works.
