Endangered salmon may soon swim freely up a Maine river, but a comeback isn’t guaranteed

Endangered Atlantic salmon in Maine may soon have the opportunity to swim freely up the Narraguagus River, though experts caution that a full population comeback is not guaranteed. During a recent canoe trip to the remote upper reaches of the river, observer Ellie Mason noted that the waterway and its tributaries offer prime, largely undeveloped habitat surrounded by forests.

The Narraguagus River represents one of the wildest river systems remaining in Maine. Despite the favorable conditions of the habitat, the survival and recovery of the endangered salmon species face ongoing challenges that leave their future uncertain.
