Enugu LG poll: Residents blame voter apathy to lack of awareness

By Alumona Ukwueze NSUKKA – Elections across the 17 local government areas in Enugu State witnessed large turnout of voters even as the exercise was largely peaceful. While speaking at his Umu Ozzi Ward 8 after casting his vote, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state, Chris Onyekachi Simon, said the large turnout of voters was an indication of the acceptance of his party in the state. He thanked Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and the people of his local government area for their massive support, stating that he would provide quality service to repay them for their trust and support.

He further stated that he would ensure that peace returned to all the communities in his local government area. Equally, the member representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Dennis Agbo, who equally addressed journalists at his Essodo Ward in Uda, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State thanked President Bola Tinubu for giving South East favourable consideration in his government. He stated that due to viable economic reforms of President Tinubu’s administration, state governors and local government chairmen are now embarking on gigantic projects to drive home the dividends of democracy to the people.

Agbo who is equally the candidate of the APC for the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency further added that the acceptance of the party in Enugu State would make the forthcoming general elections smooth ride for APC. The Enugu State Local Government Election conducted in the state witnessed late arrival of materials and poor turnout of voters. A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the election on Saturday, observed that electoral materials started arriving at polling centres as of 9:45a.m. Most ​‌‍‍‍‍⁠⁠‌⁠‍‌‍‌‍​‌‌​polling centres within the state capital at Timber Market, Maryland, Independence Layout, Community Primary School, Ugwuaji, Abakpa Nike witnessed poor voter turnout.

Reacting, the former Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Chief Chiemezie Nkwuo, said that by 12 noon the polling centres would be filled with voters. ‘Some residents came here before 8a.m. but later went home to attend to domestic issues and businesses,” he said.

Meanwhile, a resident, Mr Dominic Agu, said he did not vote because the election had already been concluded, as only the candidates from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) contested. “There is no local government election. What we have are affirmations of candidates.
