Italy maintains its border standoff with Spain and extends the suspension of Schengen

On August 31, the Italian government decided to extend the suspension of the Schengen agreement regarding travel from Spain by an additional two weeks. This measure maintains the migration controls at ports and aerodromes for travelers arriving from Spanish territory, exactly one month after the initial restrictions were implemented in response to the migration crisis in Ceuta.

In reciprocal action announced the same day, the Spanish government also decided to prolong its own port and airport controls on travelers coming from Italy for another fifteen days. The bilateral extensions reflect a sustained continuation of stricter border checks between the two European nations.
