Eddie Belmonte, the pioneering Puerto Rican jockey who made history by winning the Preakness Stakes, has died at the age of 83. His passing on Wednesday in San Juan left the Puerto Rican horse racing community in deep mourning.

Belmonte achieved legendary status in the sport as the first jockey from Puerto Rico to conquer the Preakness Stakes, one of the prestigious legs of American horse racing's Triple Corona. His death was officially noted by the president of the Horseracing Hall of Fame.
